This qualification provides a highly engaging route to becoming a teacher. The level 5 Diploma in Teaching follows the occupational standards for the FE and Skills teacher role, which means that the content and structure perfectly align with what employers have said they want of successful trainee teachers.

The course is ideal for practitioners who wish to develop skills in dynamic teaching, long-term learning, effective assessment, and supporting all learners in achieving their potential. The course provides a solid foundation for a rewarding career in teaching and the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification to work towards QTLS status (Qualified Teaching Learning and Skills), the gold standard for the sector.

This two-year programme is delivered on campus at Loughborough College, which offers access to excellent facilities and resources to support you on your journey to becoming a teacher.

Course Content

Across the two years of study, you will develop your knowledge of the topics below which will be assessed through completing assignments.

  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Managing Behaviour

In order to develop your teaching practice, we will complete 10 observations of your teaching practice to help you develop and hone your knowledge and skills.

Alongside this, you will create a portfolio of evidence, including items such as a reflective diary, a CPD log and schemes of learning.

At the end of the course, you will take part in a VIVA once all your assignments and portfolio have been completed to showcase the knowledge you have gained on your journey to becoming a teacher.

All of this will be completed with support and guidance from your course tutor, subject specialist mentor and pastoral support tutor.

You will be invited to a graduation ceremony after successfully completing the course.

Entry Requirements

  • Subject-specific qualification at level 3 or higher;
  • GCSEs or equivalent in English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above;
  • The ability to undertake 150 teaching hours (100 of which must be in your specialist area);
  • The ability to undertake at least 20 hours of remote delivery;
  • Successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check;
  • Have a subject specialist mentor in place;
  • The above will be discussed in an interview with the course leaders to determine if this is the right course for you.

Progression

Following completion of this course, you can apply for QTLS status, enabling practice within both the secondary and further education sectors. Graduates may choose to continue their studies or progress on to a wide range of careers in education.
