College Lecturer Transforms Teaching through Autism Awareness Course
Steve West, a Hospitality and Catering lecturer at Loughborough College, has significantly enhanced his approach to teaching neurodiverse students after completing a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism.
The online course, which Steve completed between February and July 2024, gave him vital tools to better engage with his students, particularly those on the Autism spectrum.
Reflecting on the experience, Steve explained that he felt something was missing in his understanding of neurodiverse learners. While he had seen some success in engaging students with Autism over the years, he says the course "opened my eyes" to new strategies and deeper insights.
"It was an absolute pleasure doing this course, I wish I had known about it 20 years ago," Steve said. "Now, I feel much better equipped to use the tools and techniques provided to support my students."
The course offered Steve a flexible way to further his professional development. He praised the team behind the course for their empathetic feedback and ongoing support.
The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism covers a wide range of topics, starting at a foundational look into the condition, through to person-centred approaches, sensory processing and perception, and how individuals with Autism navigate life transitions and access opportunities.
Since completing the course, Steve has already begun applying what he learned in his classes, using a more inclusive, student-centred approach. He is eager to support his neurodiverse students more effectively and hopes to inspire other educators to follow a similar path.
"From now on, I hope to use these new tools to help my students develop and thrive," Steve said. He has also enrolled in a Level 2 Certificate in Self-Harm and Suicide Awareness and Prevention, furthering his commitment to understanding the challenges many of his students may face.
Steve's story highlights the power of continued professional development for educators. His newfound knowledge has the potential to make a lasting impact on both his teaching and the lives of his students.
