Loughborough College’s IOW Challenge Team Will Embark on 66-Mile Isle of Wight Trek to Raise Funds for Charity

Posted: 9th February 2023 - 3:28pm

Team 1909 – A group of staff members from Loughborough College are setting out on a challenging 66-mile trek around the Isle of Wight to raise money for three important causes. The hike will take place towards the end of April and raise funds for Macmillan and local charities Molly's Gift and PACE.

To prepare for this gruelling journey, the team embarked on a 21.6-mile circular walk from Loughborough College, following the River Soar. The training walk was a great success, and the team is one step closer in their preparations to tackle the Isle of Wight trek.

The IOW challenge team are motivated by their personal experiences and a desire to give back to the communities that have supported them. They hope to raise significant funds for PACE, Macmillan and Molly's Gift and have already received great support from the college, family, and friends.

PACE is a charity dedicated to meeting the physical, mental, emotional and social needs of the vulnerable, excluded, disadvantaged, hurting and the general public. Phil Weaver, a spokesperson for the charity, said, "We are thrilled that this group has chosen to raise funds for PACE. The money they raise will make a huge difference to the lives of the local community we serve."

Macmillan is a leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Team member Corinne Gardner said, "cancer affects so many people, and we are grateful for the research they do to help fight this disease. As a charity, they were incredibly supportive of my mum in her hardest battle, meaning that she, and I, never felt alone during that time. In addition to the research they do, they are also there to provide helpful advice, guide you to other support sources, both financial and emotional and are always on hand to listen. Sadly many other people have and will need their support, so anything I can do to raise more awareness and funding for them to continue their amazing work is an honour. I’m very proud to be raising funds to help them continue their vital work in the fight against cancer."

Molly’s Gift is a local charity that provides opportunities in sports and physical activity for disadvantaged young people, tackling mental health, holiday hunger and social isolation. Team member Rachael Owen said, “the money we raise will help them continue supporting children most in need in the local community to become more active”. Steve Wilkinson, a Trustee of Molly’s Gift, added, “Molly, a football teammate of Rachael’s daughter, would be delighted that a College member of staff is helping to support the charity further”.

The team will be accepting donations and encourages anyone who would like to support their cause to visit their fundraising pages below. The trek will surely be a challenging but rewarding experience, and the team is excited to raise funds for these great causes.
