Tom Wood, currently studying for a BA degree in Contemporary Music, Performance and Production at Loughborough College, has secured a hands-on placement in the music industry, working as an assistant front of house engineer touring with classic rock tribute act, The Classic Rock Show.

“I secured a work placement with the band and toured around the UK. I did two shows at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall and Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall,” said Tom.

Whilst on placement, Tom took part in a variety of key behind the scenes duties, from helping to load and set up equipment, to supporting with soundcheck and clearing up after shows.

“I enjoyed the placement, and although I had to do long hours, it didn’t feel that long. The people were friendly and accommodating, and it was a pleasant environment to work in. I learned about the technology for modern live shows, the hours and energy required, and got a feel for the touring lifestyle.

“I got on well on the placement; the crew treated me as one of their own, and not as an outsider. They let me get on with what I was doing, just guiding me – it went well.

Looking ahead to graduating, Tom feels hopeful that the experience gained on this placement could lead to new opportunities within the industry, “I gained contacts and leads from crew members and companies. I could potentially get a job in the sound industry. Next year when I finish my course, I could work in recording, or after gaining industry experience, I’d be interested in the recording and music side of things.

Tom highly recommends the Contemporary Music, Performance and Production course to prospective students, “I’d recommend the music degree here at Loughborough College. This course enabled me to do a work placement, experience the world of work, and opened my eyes to real possibilities,”

Music lecturer Matt Toole commented, “As an FE college delivering higher education, we are very well placed to use our expertise in working with industry to bolster the skills of the new generation of the workforce, our students. Doing a placement provides an excellent opportunity for students to network and gain contacts, as well as boosting their confidence. Tom did a fantastic job in securing this placement and he is a great example of a student who will benefit from the opportunity”.
