Loughborough College Sixth Form students have gone above and beyond this term, showing incredible community spirit and generosity through a series of impactful charity and fundraising initiatives.
Kicking off the season of giving, and despite challenging weather conditions, a determined group of Sixth Form students took to the iconic Silverstone Formula 1 Motor Racing Grand Prix Circuit to for a challenging half marathon for charity. Their collective efforts raised an impressive £6,200 for 17 different charities.
Many participants achieved personal bests, with standout performances from four students who placed 3rd, 9th, 10th, and 15th in their chosen distances. Accounting Lecturer, James Shields celebrated the impressive efforts of the students, highlighting the leadership and dedication of student Harshal Dattani, whose idea it was to participate in the event. He commented:
“It was amazing being able to cheer on our learners. Everyone completed their run in the treacherous conditions and raised several thousands of pounds for charity.
“A big thank you to Harshal, who suggested this challenge and helped me to coordinate it. He completed his first-ever half marathon after several months of training. Well done, Harshal – you are amazing!"
This event garnered interest from beyond the college, with members of the wider community eager to join the inspiring initiative. Plans are already underway for another event next term.
Earlier this month, Year 13 students embraced the Christmas spirit by partnering with local charity PACE to support local Loughborough families in need. Each tutor group was assigned a family and thoughtfully chose gifts based on their profiles.
On collecting the presents, Charity Manager for PACE, Ellen Lockwood shared: “It’s not often that I’m speechless, but I’m finding it hard to put into words how your actions and generosity have made me feel. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you. You’re all legends.”
Meanwhile, Year 12 tutor group F4 turned their attention to international non-profit, the Red Cross, organising a creative awareness and fundraising campaign. Students wore red and designed a scavenger hunt featuring facts about the Red Cross. They also created a supportive message board for Red Cross workers, which will be shared with the charity.
To boost fundraising efforts, a Year 13 student arranged a Taskmaster-style Christmas event for students, packed with festive challenges, snacks, music and fun.
