Following the success of receiving a Queen’s Anniversary Prize, Loughborough College's unique Space Engineering course was recently celebrated at an awards ceremony at the National Space Centre in Leicester.
Now in its 12th year, the course’s achievements were recognized by guests such as Loughborough College Deputy Principal Heather Clarke and Chair of Governors Stephen Smith.
Students, parents, and staff were welcomed to the event by Neil Shorrock, Estates and Operations Director at the National Space Centre, who spoke about the success of the Space Engineering enhanced A Level programme and its partners.
Three students—Dev Pancholi, William Harvey, and Luca Calardo-Cooper—received awards for their dedication, academic success, and abilities throughout the programme.
Luisa Walford was also recognised for her commitment to the course and her recent nomination for the Association of Colleges’ (AoC) Student of the Year award.
Sophie Allan, Head of Teaching and Learning at the National Space Academy, praised the students for their hard work and reminded them of the importance of resilience, determination, and making a positive difference in the world.
Speaking about the students’ achievements, Heather Clarke said: “Our Space Engineering programme equips learners with the technical skills and knowledge they need to succeed, whilst also encouraging them to think beyond the conventional and to push the boundaries of what is possible.
“The accomplishments we celebrated at the awards ceremony are part of a collaborative effort between the National Space Centre, National Space Academy, the students and our lecturers at Loughborough College. Everyone involved should be really proud.”
Each student on the cohort was also presented with a certificate of completion by Sophie Allan to recognise their hard work and commitment during the course.
In partnership with the National Space Academy, Loughborough College established the UK’s first full-time post-16 course for students in Space Engineering in 2012. It is the only course of its kind, unique both in its subject matter and in its combination of BTEC qualifications with traditional A Levels.
