Students from across the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy department have touched back down in the UK after a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan, funded by The Turing Scheme.

Over the course of the two-week trip, staff and students undertook a jam-packed itinerary, learning more from experts on the cutting edge of hair and beauty whilst also discovering the deep history of Japan in both Tokyo and Kamakura.

Kicking off the trip, students explored the Tokyo metropolis, visiting iconic sights such as the Shibuya Crossing, and Ueno Zoological Gardens whilst learning more about the future of their industry from professional workshops at the world renowned Seyfert Academy, Head Spa, and SABFA Hair and Beauty Training Academy to list a few.

Level 3 Hairdressing student Ewan shared: “This trip has brought me closer to my passion for hairdressing. It’s been eye opening to see such a different view and new techniques. I’m so grateful to have had the experience, and I’ve learnt so much.”

Japan is known for its blend of futuristic technology, and rich history, and both students and staff had the opportunity to learn more about the culture, immersing themselves in experiences in the Imperial Palace, Meiji Jingu shrine, and Senso-ji Temple, where they had the chance to dress in Kimonos.

Reflecting on how the group embraced the Japanese cultural experiences, Hairdressing learner Charlotte said: “I really wanted to indulge in every activity on offer, and I loved learning about the history and ways of living. I have a lifetime of memories and stories.”

The trip was funded by the government’s Turing Scheme, which promotes international educational experiences for students across the country. Established in 2021, the scheme has supported over 1,160 trips over 160 international destinations.

Curriculum Manager for Hairdressing, Barbering, and Beauty Therapy at Loughborough College, Claire Springthorpe shared: “Our visit to Japan was truly invaluable, and I am so proud of the enthusiasm and passion the students have shown.

“This was an incredible opportunity to learn more about these constantly growing industries directly from the people pioneering new techniques and technologies. Thank you to all the amazing trainers and teachers who shared their skills with us.”
