A big-hearted Loughborough College student has been crowned Leicestershire’s Young Volunteer of the Year at the Lord Lieutenant’s Young Person of the Year Awards 2022.

Frances Miller, 18, won the volunteering award for her tireless work with the Loughborough-based charity, Molly’s Gift, where she helps disabled and disadvantaged young people to get involved in sport.

At the same time, Frances had been juggling her studies for A Levels in Biology, Business and Geography as well as playing football for the Loughborough Foxes.

She was shortlisted in the final three of the Young Volunteer of the Year Award which recognises individuals who enhanced their community, helped a relative or neighbour and who have led a sports-based club or society. The final was held at County Hall in Glenfield on Monday, 9th May.

Fellow Loughborough College student Ciaran Lennon, 17, was also shortlisted in the Young Artist of the Year Award.

Frances said: “When my name was read out that I'd won, I was astonished and shocked. The other finalists and I spoke about what we've done within the community, and it was amazing to hear so when I won, I was even more surprised but also incredibly proud. For Molly's Gift we hope to keep growing and helping all children within the community, to hopefully impact everyone, most of all ‘to make everyone smile’.

“The evening itself was a great experience, surrounded by brilliant young people, all with different stories and impacts on others. It was beautiful; despite being nervous, the evening brought a lovely atmosphere and, to top it off, a delightful meal.”

Her Loughborough College tutor, Seran Bradley, described Frances to be humble and hard-working and said: “I was so proud of her and elated for her to be recognised for the huge amount of work that she does for Molly’s Gift. I feel so grateful to have been able to put her forward for this well-deserved accolade. It was fabulous evening and so uplifting to be in the presence of so many amazing young people.”

, Principal & CEO at Loughborough College, said: “We are so proud of Frances for this deserved award. To be nominated for a Lord Lieutenant’s Award is an incredible achievement so to win is magnificent.

“Not only does Frances work hard in her studies, but she embodies the College’s inclusive culture and desire to give back to the community by helping disadvantaged children in her own time and providing them with access to sport. She’s a tremendous role model and we are delighted for her.”
