Every year 10,000 building fires are caused by faulty wiring.
College students and staff recently met with a leading electrical equipment supplier to learn more about new regulations to improve safety.
Chris Alexander from Electrium, owned by global powerhouse Siemens, visited the college to talk with Electrical Installation students and staff.
Chris demonstrated new devices, which are now mandated on certain electrical circuits being installed in buildings and spoke with learners about the importance of safety in electrical installation.
‘I was really impressed by the software used, and it’s fantastic to be able to engage with industry experts like Chris.’ said Level 3 Electrical Installation learner Dev Valand.
As well as complying with emerging regulations, another important benefit of the latest technology is to provide protection against electrical power surges, which can cause equipment damage, systems downtime, and lost production.
With today’s changing weather climate, Chris also discussed with learners how lightning can create electrical destruction.
Brandon Storer, who is studying a Level 2 Electrical transition programme to T-Levels, commented:
‘I really enjoyed learning about circuit breakers and found the talk very helpful for my studies.’
Supervising Technician Keith Large added:
“Electrium provides College learners with ongoing support through classroom talks and innovative product demonstrations of their cutting-edge technology. Chris helped explain these new regulations and amendments, keeping our students updated with the latest information and solutions. We are grateful to all our corporate partners and supporters for helping our students prepare for employment and be work ready.”
