It’s been a busy summer for our Motorsport team who have spent the last few months touring the UK, competing in the BTRDA Clubman’s Rallycross Championship.
Before the team took to the track, they headed to the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil the College’s new livery display for the first time with new title sponsor Wera Tools. Motorsport Lecturer Alex Fletcher said, “Visitors showed lots of interest in the College and our motorsports offer. Once they realised the car we displayed has been built and maintained solely by students, they were really blown away.”
The team’s success story then continued when they headed to the Home of Rallycross, Lydden Hill in Kent for the fifth round of the BTRDA Clubman’s Rallycross Championship. The team faced new challenges after a re-design of the track, which now features a jump on the infield gravel section.
Both students preparing and maintaining the two-car team showed great composure and initiative, supporting drivers Alex Fletcher and Gary Cook to bring home a double win for the College in their respective classes.
The winning streak didn’t stop there, as at the beginning of September the team made the trip to Pembrey in Wales for rounds six and seven. With a team of fifteen in tow, Level 3 BTEC Motorsport learners had the opportunity to experience realistic working environments.
With dazzling sunshine and temperatures soaring into the high 20’s with clear skies both days, Lecturer and Driver Gary Cook shared, “It was very testing, not just for our students working in high temperatures for two days, but also for both me and Alex as temperatures inside the cars were pushing 40 degrees.”
Our team kept their cool however and both drivers managed to do ‘the double’, wining their respective classes both days with our production driver Alex Fletcher claiming the title of fastest laps on both days.
The team is now eagerly awaiting the final round of the Championship, being held in Knockhill, Scotland at the end of October.
