College Alumnus Named Head Coach for Wheelchair Basketball at Invictus Games

College alumnus George Bates is flying the flag for Loughborough College sports after being announced as Team UK’s Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach for the upcoming Invictus Games, to be held in Dusseldorf later this year.

Following his studies, George has maintained a track record of successes, having gone on to an outstanding playing career across Europe and competing in para sports around the world. George has also continued to make his mark, representing Team GB at the IWBF World Wheelchair Basketball Championship, where he helped the team to victory in 2018.

With his passion for the game leading him to international renown, George has maintained his Leicestershire roots, blazing new trails in adaptive sport, being named Head Coach of Loughborough Lightning Wheelchair Basketball in 2021.

Speaking on his appointment for the Invictus Games, George said, “It’s a great privilege to be appointed Head Coach for Wheelchair Basketball at Team UK. The Invictus Games is an incredible opportunity for our service people and veterans, and I’m really excited to be a part of that”.

George’s appointment to Team UK is a shining example of the ambition our College instils in our learners, and his track record for adaptive sports is testament to his drive and talent.

The Invictus Games will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany between 9-16 September 2023. We’re wishing George and all of Team UK good luck!
