Chef Lecturer and Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and Catering, Darren Creed has built on the Olympic Spirit at Loughborough College after he was awarded two gold medals and a bronze in the annual British Transplant Games this weekend.
Darren, who underwent a remarkable kidney transplant after finding a donor match in his wife Donna, competed in the 2024 British Transplant Games, held in Nottingham. Representing Team Leicester, Darren scooped two gold medals, and a bronze in swimming and volleyball respectively.
Reflecting on his success on social media, Darren shared, “Not many people have heard of the British Transplant Games, but to me and many others, it’s a huge opportunity for representation. To be able to take part is amazing, and I feel privileged to take part and represent Team Leicester. Swimming is my favourite pastime, so to get two golds in my races is a great feeling.”
The British Transplant Games was launched more than 40 years ago, with athletes competing in over 25 different sports. Transplant survivors, including children as young as five compete, and many sportspeople go on to take part in the World Transplant Games, which is set to be held in Germany next year.
Darren was previously celebrated for his fundraising achievements for the Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity at the inaugural Good for Me, Good for FE Awards. Following his one-in-22 million match with Donna for her organ donation, friends and family took on the Three Peaks Challenge, raising thousands for the charity.
