Abigail puts herself on the map after A level success

Geographer Abigail McEwen is celebrating after securing top grades to get into Nottingham University and begin her ambition of making the world a better place.

The 18-year-old from Loughborough secured A*s in A level Psychology, Geography and Environmental Science and will be off to study a degree in Geography.

It means she can follow her dream of a career in sustainable solutions to help clean up the world and save the planet.

Abigail said: “I was super happy and relieved that all my hard work has paid off. I am so happy. It allows me to progress onto the next stage at uni and take me to the sector that I would love to work in. I can’t wait to celebrate with my friends and family.

“I feel really passionate about really important topics like climate change and sustainability so I want to play a part in that sector.”

Abigail said she chose Loughborough College because it was one of the few that offered Environmental Science as an A level and offered her more independence to work in her own way.

“When I went to the open day, the atmosphere was really welcoming and friendly. They also showed me the subjects and that made me excited to join. Nowhere else locally offered environmental science,” she said.

“They also treat you more independently and give you more freedom. It’s a more mature environment. Other colleges and sixth forms I looked at said you couldn’t leave the campus once you were in for the day.”

Abigail also praised tutors for the way in which they supported students through Covid, online teaching and the challenges of the pandemic.

“All of my tutors were really supportive, especially during Covid and doing online learning,” she said.

“They actually made it really good because they were so willing and happy to give you extra support and would get back to you at any time. When we were back in class, they would always be willing to stay behind and give you extra support if you needed it.

“There were also loads of well-being and mindfulness activities, which were especially helpful during exam season.”

Abigail said Loughborough College is perfect for students who would flourish by managing their own timetables and work plan.

She added: “College is a massive jump from GCSE in so many good ways. You’re given so much more independence and trusted to do your own work. But you have to plan and organise to make sure you fit everything in. If you can do that, you’ll love studying here.”
