College Celebrates Year of Generosity with Over 500 Hours of Charity Contributions

Posted: 14th August 2024 - 10:29am

As we approach the beginning of the new academic year, we wanted to take a look back at some of the inspiring highlights from 2023-24 and celebrate the incredible work of our staff and students who took part the national Good for Me, Good for FE initiative.

Launched in 2021, Good for Me, Good for FE is a nationwide campaign empowering staff and students in further education to take part in charity and community outreach projects.

Over this year, Loughborough College has donated:

  • 115 food items to local social supermarkets
  • Over £9,000 to charities, foundations, and named funds
  • Over 550 hours of volunteering to charities, community groups, heritage sites and more

In November, we were proud to be celebrated at the inaugural Good for Me, Good for FE Charity Awards. Held in London, the ceremony celebrated the pioneering social action of further education communities across the country. Former T Level student Harry Disney was named winner of the Student Volunteer of the Year award for his outstanding work with St John’s Ambulance, and staff initiatives from across college were highly commended.

Later in November, our Hairdressing, Barbering, and Beauty Therapy teams decided to think pink as they launched a fundraising campaign, encouraging clients at the Radmoor Salon to indulge in pampering in the name of charity. The Look Good Feel Better campaign supports cancer patients, offering free workshops in confidence and wellbeing.

In February, students and staff at the Radmoor Restaurant shone an important light on food sustainability as they collaborated with social supermarket, Your Store on an innovative evening menu of mystery ingredients provided by charity, FareShare. The successful event celebrated creativity in the kitchen, whilst also highlighting the importance of sustainability, community outreach, and ending food insecurity.

The fundraising fun in the Radmoor Centre didn’t stop there! To celebrate Red Nose Day in March, Beauty Therapy students, armed with wax strips encouraged staff and students to brave the salon chair and have their legs waxed. Athletes from the NFL Academy were among the numerous volunteers, raising an impressive £300 for the cause.

The annual 24-hour Sportathon returned to College in May, as staff and students showcased their sporting excellence in the name of charity, raising a staggering £3,300 for local special named fund, Samuel’s Promise. Over 120 students took part in the full 24-hour stint, trying their hand at a variety of activities, including archery, karate, volleyball, and dance.

We also saw excellent feats of strength and endurance in the HR Team as Employee Relations Advisor Rhys channelled his inner Rocky to complete 100 push-ups every day in May to raise viral funds and awareness for Autism West Midlands. Rhys smashed his original £150 target, supported by colleagues from across College, who took to the office to cheer him on!

Most recently, the College’s brave Team 1909 took on another gruelling challenge, scaling the highs and lows of the Peak District for a 100km ultramarathon, raising vital funds for a variety of charities. After months of training across tricky terrain, the group completed the challenge, raising more than £3,00 for their causes.
