Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. Hairdressers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

Entry requirements

Typically, 3 GCSE’s at Grade 4/C or above (one must be English or Maths), or Level 2 in Hairdressing required. (VQR)

Apprentices with GCSE grades C/4 or above in English and Maths are exempt from Functional Skills.

If an Apprentice has not already achieved Level 2 (GCSE C/4 or above) English & Maths they must: - Study for and take tests for Level 2 English & Maths and achieve Level 1 English & Maths.

Initial Assessment results on enrolment: Maths Entry 3 and English Level 1 or higher.

  • L2 Diploma for Hair Professionals
  • 7002 Hair Professionals Level 2
  • L2 Functional Skills English and Maths (if required)

Programme includes

Must complete a range of assessments practical and online exam. Regular formative summative assessment, development of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace. As part of the qualification, Apprentices must complete all units and be competent in real work environment.

Where can you work?

You can work in a range of hair salons as your training as a stylist, this will develop your skills for the understanding and knowledge to be competent to run a column of clients.

Key information

  • Start date is set college Cohort – Late October – Enrolment to take place the month prior to cohort start date
  • The apprenticeship is primarily based in the workplace
  • Within the first months additional training is delivered at Loughborough College – Weekly on Monday’s 9.00-15.00 - If Functional Skills are required these will take place Monday’s 15:00-17:00.

Additional information

This Apprenticeship consists of a mixture of blended learning in the work place and taught delivery at Loughborough College. The taught element will be every Monday at Loughborough College for the duration of the practical delivery of the Apprenticeship.
