This occupation is found in the sport and physical activity sector in high-performance, community and school environments.
The broad purpose of the Sport Coach occupation is to use extensive technical and tactical sports knowledge and skills to design and deliver coaching programmes that engage, motivate and evolve participants’ skills and performance.
Sport coaches aim to provide meaningful and high-quality learning, development and performance experiences. They support the achievement of medals in talent, national and international competition, enrich performance in local competitions, increase participation, raise educational standards, enhance wellbeing and drive social change. Sport coaches can influence national wellness to reduce burden on the National Health Service.
Entry requirements
- GCSE grades C/4 or above in English and Maths are exempt from Functional Skills
- Level 3 Sport Qualification/Coaching Experience
- If an Apprentice has not already achieved Level 2 (GCSE C/4 or above) English or Maths they must: -Study for and achieve Functional Skills Level 2 English OR Maths (Apprentices must have one or the other to be eligible)
- Initial Assessment on enrolment Level 1 Maths & English.
Qualifications obtained
L4 Apprenticeship Standard in Sports Coaching
L2 Functional Skills English and/or Maths (if required)

StreetGames Workshops - Behaviour Management/Multi-Skills/Engaging Women and Girls in Sport
Programme includes
Regular formative assessment, development of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace and a work-based project. As part of the qualification, Apprentices must complete all units and be competent in real work environment.
- Design and deliver high-quality curriculum sessions
- Increase the school's physical activity levels
- Developing the use of technology in physical education sessions
- Managing equipment and resources
- Facilitating development regarding the coaching team
- Develop the learner's performance at a local and national level
- Target setting for learners through class and individual
- Collaborate with partnership schools to deliver intra and inter-school events
- Deliver extracurricular activities for Morning, Lunchtime or Afterschool
- One-to-one support for SEND and Gifted and Talented pupils
- Measure and evaluate the impact of coaching practice on school standards by comparing children’s results against local and national benchmarks.
- Creating a work based project to develop new/current coaching services
- Additional L4-5 study skills delivered by HE staff
Where can you work?
School Sport Apprentices are employed by their host school to support the delivery of Physical Education and School Sport.

Key information
- Enrolment process takes place once a year in June/July, start date of August, primarily based in the workplace.
- Within the first 18 months alternate week OTJ delivery on college site (K/S/B). Every other week K/S/B OTJ completed at work premises. Delivery will involve a combination of face to face and online delivery.

Additional information
Our delivery model includes college attendance for completion of the required Apprenticeship Standard and 1:1 support from your trainer assessor in the workplace. If functional skills are required, these are taught in college lessons.
