Content

In your final year, you’ll design and carry out an individual research project and study in-depth issues in sport and exercise science in a subject area of your choice. You will also complete more in-depth modules exploring the key areas of interdisciplinary approaches to sport and exercise science.

With many practical and hands-on learning experiences, your contact days will involve hands-on learning in our specialist practical facilities.

  • The fully equipped Strength and Conditioning and rehabilitation suite features Olympic weightlifting platforms and an anti-gravity treadmill.
  • A Biomechanics Suite with a Qualisys 3D motion capture analysis system.
  • State-of-the-art physiology lab allowing for environmental manipulations, physiological analysis, and performance testing.
  • A Foresight golf simulator with video analysis performance data capture.
  • Performance analysis suite allowing for live, real-time capturing and analysis of sports events.
  • World-class sports training facilities, including sports halls and artificial pitches.

Our highly experienced industry experts and academics will guide you through your learning, including lectures, seminars, online activities, practical activities, laboratory skills, peer-group learning and independent study.

You will undertake various assessments, including professional discussions, practicals, portfolios, consultations, essays, and presentations.

  • Contemporary Issues in Sport CoachingThis module will develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of contemporary issues relating local and global sport coaching practice.
  • Innovative Practical PedagogyThis module will develop your knowledge and understanding of the delivery of practical activity within a variety of environments, exploring innovative approaches to engage participants with sport and physical activity.
  • Independent Project in Sport and Physical ActivityThis module provides you with an opportunity to undertake an in-depth project on a subject appropriate and related to your programme of study that refelects your interests and expertise
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sport and Physical ActivityThis module will develop critical enterprise attributes and skills that enable you to identify and capitalise on emerging opportunities within the sport and physical activity industry.

Entry
Requirements

Successful Completion of HND or Level 5 programme in a related discipline. We accept students directly into year three of this course who have completed a relevant HND/ Foundation degree. For 25/26, students will be admitted in year 2 who have successfully completed an HNC/ Cert HE in a relevant subject area. If you wish to enter at year one, you will be required to complete the HNC Sport & Exercise Science- Coaching Science Pathway, upon successful completion of this, you will be eligible to enter year 2 of this course.

GCSEs or equivalent in English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above.

Opportunities

Following completion of this course, students may apply to study at the master’s (MSc/MA) level or look to gain employment within the sport science industry or other graduate roles.

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. A summary of the costs that you may be expected to pay, and what is included, while studying a course within the sports department are listed below:

  • DBS checks, where required, are included in the fees.
  • The cost of all assessments at first attempt are included in your course fees, but if you do not pass at first attempt, you will be responsible for resit fees at a cost of £40 per module.
  • Field trips are available throughout your programme. Whilst these are not compulsory to complete the degree programme, where a field trip is present costs are normally covered but you are expected to make a contribution towards food, which varies depending on duration of the trip.
  • The department runs a number of additional visits/ workshops/ qualifications for which students are not usually asked for payment. A refundable deposit may be required which is normally around £20. The deposit is refunded upon attendance/ successful completion of the course. There may be some food and drink costs and you should budget for day trips, which will vary depending on duration and venue.
  • All work is electronically submitted, however you will need to provide a printed copy of your final dissertation and a poster. The estimated cost for this is around £20-£25 per student in the final year.
  • You are required to purchase departmental kit for practical activities associated with your course (e.g. coaching, lab sessions, fitness testing). The price will be around £30-£100 depending on items ordered.
