Sheffield Hallam University validates the 1-year BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree course. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their knowledge and practical skills required to pursue a career in their chosen engineering discipline within the industry.

Our approach offers a combination of online/ distance learning for independent engineering project supervision (industrial project) and a weekly day attendance for the more rigorous academic topics, ideal for those balancing their studies alongside professional and personal commitments.

The course emphasizes the application of cutting-edge topics such as advanced mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and advanced engineering modelling techniques to real-world problems, incorporating sustainable, environmental, and ethical implications, equipping students with the ability to design, analyse, and implement either electrical and electronic, mechanical, or manufacturing solutions to complex problems.

Additionally, students explore emerging technologies and industrial trends, ensuring they are well-prepared to adapt to the rapidly evolving technologies within engineering.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications necessary to pursue a wide range of career opportunities within the field of engineering. They could further their studies through postgraduate research and professional certifications enhancing career prospects.

Our highly experienced industry experts and academics (PhD) will guide you through your learning, including lectures, seminars, online activities, practical activities, laboratory skills, peer-group learning, and independent study.

You will undertake various assessments, including professional discussions, practical’s, and presentations.

Mechanical Engineering Students are required to complete 120 credits.

Entry
Requirements

  • Level 5 relevant engineering certificate with minimum 3 merits
  • 2nd-year relevant engineering degree certificate- grade minimum 3 merits and above in engineering
  • A Level subject including maths and science or a Level 3 BTEC in an engineering discipline and a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a relevant specialist engineer or similar role.
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics or science with relevant industrial experience of 2 years.

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. A summary of the costs that you may be expected to pay, and what is included, while studying a course within the Engineering department are listed below:

  • DBS checks, where required, are included in the fees.
  • The cost of all assessments at first attempt are included in your course fees, but if you do not pass at first attempt you will be responsible for resit fees, at a cost of £40 per module.
  • The Engineering department run an annual field trip abroad and whilst this is not a compulsory part of the programme, it is educationally relevant. Students are asked to make a contribution towards the costs of this trip, normally around £200-250. Students will also be asked to make an additional contribution towards food, which varies depending on the duration of the trip.
  • The department runs a number of day trips and additional workshops/ qualifications, which students do not pay for. A refundable deposit may be asked for which is normally around £20. The deposit is refunded upon attendance/ successful completion of the course. There may be some food and drink costs and you should budget for day trips, which will vary depending on duration and venue.
  • All work is electronically submitted. You may need to provide a printed copy of your final dissertation and poster. The estimated cost for this is around £20-£25 per student in the final year.
