Paralympic sprint champion Thomas Young has been crowned the nation’s top disabled college athlete for 2022.
Thomas, 21, of Shepshed, won the Achievement in Disability Sport category of the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Awards on 29th April 2022 for his gold medal-winning performance in the Tokyo Paralympic T38 100m final in 2021.
Thomas, who is currently studying a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching degree at the College, was earlier this year awarded an MBE for services to sport, on top of his Paralympic and European titles. He was also crowned the British Male Para Athlete of the Year by Athletics Weekly 2021.
Thomas said: “It really means a lot to receive this award and I'm really grateful to the College for my nomination. It's a real honour to be able to champion disability sport and raise awareness through nationally recognised awards such as this.”
, Principal & CEO of Loughborough College, said: “We are so delighted for Thomas who has deservedly been recognised by AoC Sport. His achievements over the last 12 months have been phenomenal and I have no doubt that he will continue to shine on the global stage as one of Britain’s best athletes.
“As an AoC Sport Inclusion Hub, it has been an absolute privilege for Loughborough College staff to see Thomas develop and grow over the last few years through his hard work and passion. He is truly an inspiration.”
The AoC Sport Awards recognise the achievements and inspirational work of staff and students at colleges throughout the UK. The annual awards represent the very best approaches that colleges are adopting to ensure that every student is regularly participating in sport or physical activity.
Loughborough College had a total of three nominations for the awards and also included Lilli Ives Campion (Rugby) as Student Performer of the Year and Kate Robertson for Student Volunteer of the Year.
