A talented music degree student has had one of her songs played as part of a new talent showcase run by the BBC.
Beth Williams, 23, is now in her third year of a BA (Hons) Music degree at Loughborough College and, as part of her degree, submitted a song to BBC Introducing – a platform for new and emerging talent to get exposure.
And this week, Beth, of Loughborough, was thrilled when her track ‘Cut So Deep’ was played on BBC Radio Leicester. Later this month, Beth features on ‘Burning’, a new single she is releasing with lo-fi producer Sons Cassettes.
Beth, who releases music under the name Bethmae, said: “When I saw the email from the BBC, I immediately called my parents with my boyfriend and we just freaked out for a while. It was pretty surreal, I hadn’t had anything happen to me like that before so it felt really crazy to think my music was going to be played on the radio.
“I think everyone I know tuned in to listen as well, which was really cool. Just a really great experience.”
Beth started at Loughborough College as a Level 2 diploma student and worked hard to get onto the degree course where she is now putting together an online portfolio to promote herself as a songwriter.
“I’ve absolutely loved my time here, and I’m very sad to be leaving soon,” she said. “The music tutors are so supportive and fun to be around, I’d recommend the courses here to any young musician looking for guidance on anything from making music to finding a career. The facilities are fantastic also, the equipment is very high quality.”
She added: “I’m hoping to use everything I’ve learnt here to become a song writer. The education I’ve received in all areas of the industry has helped me to begin networking and reaching out to people in the music industry. The confidence I’ve gained from my degree has given me a lot of opportunities over the last few months, and I hope it continues to do so.”
Rich Alter, a lecturer in the Creative Arts team at Loughborough College, said: “We’re extremely proud of Beth. She has worked so hard throughout her time at Loughborough College and it is terrific to see her work getting wider circulation and radio play. She has some serious talent and I hope she continues to create and release material.
“We encourage students to seek ways to promote themselves and their work as well as collaborate with other artists and producers, and Beth has done exactly that.”
