Workforce Improvement Advisor - Early Years

Victoria Cockram is the Workforce Improvement Advisor at Leicestershire County Council, specialising in Early Years Inclusion and Childcare Services.

Passionate about the development of Early Years professionals, we spoke to Victoria about her role, the importance of lifelong learning, and how Skills Bootcamps at Loughborough College can support career development.

Can you tell us a little more about your role?

My role at Leicestershire County Council is multifaceted and deeply rewarding, focusing on inspiring individuals to consider a career in Early Years education. I work with a variety of groups, from young people who are just beginning to think about their career options to individuals who are returning to work after a break or exploring new career pathways. A significant part of my role is ensuring that we have a workforce capable of meeting the increasing demand for childcare spaces in our region. This involves collaborating with training providers, secondary schools, job centres, and community groups to raise awareness of the opportunities within the Early Years sector and support those interested in joining it.

I get the chance to attend career fairs, conduct mock interviews, and lead workshops, which help people understand how fulfilling and dynamic a career in Early Years can be. I also guide current practitioners who want to further their education or enhance their skills, offering advice on qualifications and CPD opportunities. It is a privilege to be part of this process and to play a role in shaping the workforce that will support the next generation of learners.

What do you think the importance of continued learning is?

Continued learning is not only important in the Early Years sector, it is vital. The landscape of Early Years education is constantly evolving, and practitioners need to be up to date with the latest methods. I trained as an Early Years Level 3 practitioner and secured employment within a nursery once I qualified. I quickly excelled and gained more responsibility. I found that sharing my knowledge with others was something I also enjoyed, so transferred my skills to become an Assessor and Lecturer for Early Years courses. I continued to learn myself and gained Level 4 and 5 qualifications in Early Years before completing my degree.

Continued learning allows practitioners to deepen their understanding of child development. Whether through short courses which focus on specific areas to support the children you are working with or more formal qualifications, all help contribute towards supporting your practice in the sector and allowing you to become the best that you can be.

How can Skills Bootcamp bridge the skills gap in Early Years?

One of the greatest challenges in Early Years education is the growing demand for qualified practitioners, especially as more families require childcare. The Skills Bootcamp addresses this by offering targeted training that equips participants with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to succeed in Early Years roles.

It gives you the edge when looking for employment and provides you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a successful Early Years practitioner. You are able to learn the role, build the foundations of the learning and understand some of the key and vital topics, making you work ready.

What sort of opportunities are there for people who complete the Skills Bootcamp?

You can confidently apply and interview for roles – and put the theory into practice in a shorter timeframe, allowing you to begin your own career journey as quickly as you can. As a Local Authority, we are committed to supporting you as you secure employment and work closely with providers to help the progression into industry.

Would you recommend the Skills Bootcamp programme with Loughborough College?

The Skills Bootcamp programme provides an exceptional foundation for anyone looking to enter the Early Years sector, offering structured, hands-on learning that really prepares participants for the realities of the industry.

The programme is designed to meet the needs of both beginners and those looking to change careers, providing them with the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to succeed. It’s not just about getting a qualification—it’s about ensuring participants feel fully prepared to enter the workforce and start making a difference from day one.

What I particularly value about the Skills Bootcamp is how it aligns with industry needs. The Bootcamp offers practical insights into what it is like to work with children in Early Years settings and the close links between the Bootcamp and local employers mean that participants have excellent opportunities to secure jobs or apprenticeships after completing the programme.

For anyone enthusiastic about working with children, the Skills Bootcamp is a perfect entry point into a career that is both rewarding and full of opportunities.
