A famous five from Loughborough College have been called up to help Team GB’s para-athletics squad shine at the European Championship this summer.
Former learners Sophie Hahn (T38 100m) and Thomas Young (T38 100m) will defend their European titles at the championships which will be held in Poland between 1st-5th June, 2021.
They will be joined by fellow alumni Olivia Breen (T38 long jump and 100m) and Libby Clegg (T11 200m). Current learner Barney Corrall will make his Team GB debut in the T38 long jump.
Barney, 20, who is currently studying a Level 2 OCR Sport at Loughborough College, said: “I’m finding difficult to process what has happened. I’m so grateful to be selected for my first senior European Championships. Thank you to British Athletics for giving me this amazing opportunity.”
Danny Lee, Curriculum Manager for elite sport at College, said: “We’re so proud to see so many of our students, past and present, representing the College and the country on a global stage.
“It’s a massive reflection of how hard our students work, dedication to their sport and the huge support they get from staff at College who help nurture their talent.
“As one of only 12 Sport Inclusion Hubs in the UK, we’re extremely proud to make sport accessible for all and we’ll be rooting for our famous five, and the Team GB squad, in June.”
The College quintet are among 47 British athletes, including 10 reigning European champions, who will take to the track and field in Bydgoszcz.
Paula Dunn MBE, the Para Athletics Head Coach said: “The World Para Athletics European Championships provide a great opportunity for our athletes to compete at a high level in a very important year. It is a fantastic competition opportunity for those athletes who are building up to Tokyo, as well as providing a platform for our Paralympic Futures Academy and Development Academy athletes who are on the pathway for Paris and Los Angeles.”
