College Community Celebrates Equality and Inclusion with Vibrant Event

Posted: 11th October 2024 - 4:26pm

The College was alive with energy and colour yesterday as students and staff came together for a double celebration of World Mental Health Day and Black History Month.

The day’s festivities aimed to raise awareness for youth mental wellbeing while also honouring the rich contributions of Black culture and history in the UK.

Guest performers entertained the crowd with steel drum covers of popular songs and chart-topping hits, encouraging staff and students to start an impromptu dancefloor, bringing even more community and joy to the event.

A key focus of the day was supporting Young Minds UK, a mental health charity dedicated to helping young people. Through mindful activities, including colouring, biscuit decorating, sporting activities, and art therapy sessions, more than £200 has been raised.

Many attendees wore bright yellow for Young Minds UK’s Hello Yellow campaign, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness around mental health issues affecting young people. By combining the importance and meaningful cause of Black History Month with the empowering message of World Mental Health Day, the event successfully united both initiatives in a way that was engaging and heartfelt.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Manager at Loughborough College, Dannii Donovan expressed her pride in the event, sharing: “It’s so important for the College community to stand together to promote mental health and celebrate diversity.

“This event was about coming together, having fun, and recognizing the incredible richness of our community. We are so proud of the funds raised for Young Minds UK and the awareness we’ve brought to World Mental Health Day and the Black History Month theme of reclaiming the narrative.”
