College Celebrated in Inaugural Further Education Charity Awards

Posted: 1st November 2023 - 10:04am

Students and staff across the further education sector have been celebrated for their pioneering social action and fundraising in the inaugural Good For Me, Good For FE charity awards.

As a founding member of the nationwide initiative, Principal and CEO praised the campaign during her speech, saying it showcases the very best of further education and our ability to come together as a community.

Here’s a breakdown of Loughborough College’s successes during the online ceremony:

Student Volunteer of the Year – Harry Disney – Winner!

Former T-Level Health learner Harry was voted Student Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding volunteer work with St John’s Ambulance, which he has been doing since he was 16. He was also recognised for his training to be a volunteer first responder with the NHS after passing his driving test. Using his skills, Harry has acted as a mentor to other students, leading demonstrations in practical lessons.

Fundraiser of the Year – Jesse Jackson/ Team 1909 – Highly Commended

Led by Curriculum Manager Jesse Jackson, Team 1909 came highly commended in the Fundraiser of the Year category after they undertook a gruelling 106km trek around the Isle of Wight to raise vital funds for several local charities. The team of six staff members trained day and night for over six months in harsh conditions for the walk which took over hours to complete, raising over £2,000 for three charities.

Charity Partner of the Year – PACE - Highly Commended

As a community charity who we work closely with on a number of fundraising initiatives, we were delighted to see that PACE were highly commended in the Charity Partner of the Year award.

Special Recognition Nominee – Darren Creed

Our Curriculum Manager Darren was also celebrated for his fantastic fundraising achievements with a Special Recognition nomination following a life-threatening polycystic kidney disease diagnosis. Darren made international news when his wife became a one in 22 million match to be his kidney donor. Since the transplant, Darren’s family and friends have taken on the Three Peaks Challenge, raising thousands of pounds for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) charity.

Darren’s nomination means he will now be invited to the House of Commons in December, where the winner of the Special Recognition award will be announced.
