Nine Loughborough College alumni will represent Team GB at this weekend’s European Athletics Team Championships in Poland.
The former Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) students will join the British team facing up against France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Ukraine in the two-day Super League event.
Taking to the track are: Alicia Barrett (100m hurdles); Ojie Edoburun (100m); Amy Hunt (4x100m relay); Tom Mortimer (5,000m); Ama Pipi (4x400m relay); Aimee Pratt (3,000m steeplechase). Triple jumpers Nathan Douglas and Naomi Ogbeta and high jumper Emily Borthwick have also made the squad.
Their call-up comes just a few days after nine other College students pulled on the Team GB vest in the 2021 Loughborough International athletics meet last weekend (23rd May). The team included pole vaulters Sophie Ashurst and Lazarus Benjamin; triple jumper Melissa Booth; Indienne King (800m); Emily Parker (3,000m steeplechase); Jeriel Quainoo (4x100m relay); Alex Bernstein (hammer); Samantha Callaway and Rhys Allen (discus).
Matt O’Dowd, Head of Elite Sport at Loughborough College, said: “The number of students, past and present, who have been through our ‘talent factory’ and are now representing Team GB is phenomenal. It makes us so proud to see these young people flourishing into top class athletes on the global stage.
“Representing Team GB at any competition is a great honour so we wish the whole team the best of luck.”
The former learners in the European Team Championships will join the 58-strong Team GB competing on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 May.
