Cutting edge medical gadgets and procedures formed part of a masterclass in medical care for Loughborough College caring services students.
The Level 3 Health & Social Care learners were treated to a workshop by Medical Mavericks, a company which inspires the next generation of medics by taking real medical and sports science equipment into colleges.
They held a full-day of ‘mini medics’ workshops where students explored the importance of data collection, analysis & diagnosis as well as measuring blood vessel diameter & circumferences with an ultrasound, lung volumes, respiration rates, taking fake blood and recording an ECG.
Jessica Yarr, one of the learners, said: “The mini medics session was very informative and definitely gave us practical health skills, which we can apply to future careers in healthcare. In the session, we took blood pressure, read oxygen saturation levels, took ultrasounds, practiced taking blood and completed ECGs. I found it really fun as it was interactive and memorable.”
Classmate Ethan Richards said: “The mini medics event was very fun, interactive and eye opening and helped to broaden my perspective on all the jobs available in the field of health and social care.”
Sharon Geary, Curriculum Manager in Caring Services, said: “The learners were able to explore a wide range of medical equipment and gain hands-on experience to support the knowledge they learn in class. The workshop also gave them a real insight to the wide range of careers available in the Health and social care sector.”
