After a year of exciting triumphs and accolades, over 200 learners from across the College’s sports academies gathered this weekend to celebrate their achievements at the annual Loughborough College Sports Awards.
Over 30 awards were given out over the course of the evening, which was held to celebrate highlights for the 24 sports academies homed at the College over the past year.
Among the winners was BTEC Sports and Exercise learner Haleemah Sulemans, who was named Volunteer of the Year. Earlier this month, Haleemah qualified as part of The FA’s Introduction to Coaching Football course and will now go on to have a more hands-on role in coaching grassroots football in her community.
Curriculum Manager for Sport and Esport, Danny Lee said, “There is so much success to celebrate, and this has been a record breaking year for us. All our students should be immensely proud of themselves for their accomplishments.
“A special thank you to our coaches, who work tirelessly in pursuit of outstanding achievement. They really do keep everything moving and inspire our student athletes. It’s a pleasure to lead them all into another record-breaking season.”
Other award winners included triathlete Ben Smallbone, who took home the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) Athlete of the Year award. The women’s football academy were named Team of the Year, beating out tough competition from seven other academies.
Dan Jackson, Elite Sport Manager, also shared his congratulations, saying, "It’s been an extraordinary year for Loughborough College sports. The dedication and commitment of our learners have led to unparalleled success. Congratulations to all the winners and participants for making this year truly record-breaking.”
For the big award of the evening, it was rugby star Carmela Morrall, who was awarded Sports Personality of the Year. Carmela, a back the England Women’s Red Roses U20s squad, has also recently extended her contract with local rugby union team, Loughborough Lightning.
