Loughborough College alumna Katie Boulter has been named the new British No. 1 women’s tennis player following a triumphant win at the Nottingham Open this weekend, and semi-final run at the Surbiton Trophy last week.

Taking the top spot for the first time in her career, Katie has rocketed up the global World Tennis Association’s rankings, and now holds the number 77 spot, after this weekend’s storming victory at Nottingham’s Rothesay Open, close to her home county of Leicestershire.

Native to Woodhouse Eaves, Katie’s roots in tennis stem from her childhood in Loughborough, being allowed to use the facilities of the College and University to hone her skills before enrolling at the College, where she graduated in 2018.

Speaking earlier this year, Katie shared, “Whilst I was at College, I’d learn but also train…when the tennis was hectic, Loughborough College gave me the opportunity to focus on my studies; it provided the structure I needed.”

Continuing to reflect on her time at Loughborough College, Katie credits the staff at the College for encouraging and supporting her blossoming career, “I appreciate all the staff at College who helped me in so many different ways. I don’t have a normal lifestyle, but they were great to me. Thank you, Loughborough College.”

The College sport alumni’s star has continued to be on the rise since her time at Loughborough. In 2017, whilst studying at the College, Katie made her Wimbledon debut, landing a wildcard entry that allowed her to play in the women’s singles main draw before breaking into the top 200 rankings.

Now, Katie is looking ahead to new challenges in her sport, both on home soil, and internationally. She kicked off her 2023 season by triumphing at the Canberra International event and has the final Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon later this summer, and the US Open in September ahead of her.
