For Chloe Leslie, T Levels aren’t just a qualification. They are a gateway to a whole new world of opportunities that she didn’t realise she could take.
Chloe, 17, of Kegworth, started her T Level in Level 3 Education and Childcare at Loughborough College in September 2021 with her heart set on working in a nursery or school.
This first year has been really interesting. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want to do
But the breadth of different areas of study and the range of potential career paths has opened Chloe’s eyes to a variety of careers.
“This first year has been really interesting. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want to do,” she said.
“I have always known that I’ve wanted to work with children. But since starting the course I’ve seen what a broad sector it is. There are loads of things I can do with the course and the great thing is T Levels give you UCAS points – that’s what attracted me in the first place.”
Chloe is now looking at a potential career in paediatric medicine as a either a nurse or midwife and hopes to use her T Level qualification as a springboard to university.
“Because It’s recognised by universities and because it opens up so many pathways, I’m considering nursing or midwifery. We already learn about medicine for children and symptoms of certain illnesses and that has really inspired me.”
As well as opening her mind to a new career, Chloe said the T Level course is perfect for people who learn better by doing.
She said: “The course has been great. About 40% of it is on placement and it’s really practical. There aren’t many exams so it’s more course-work and the fact it gives you an insight into what work is actually like. The T Level really opens your eyes and shows you what you’d be going into.
“I really didn’t fancy A Levels because I learn better doing practical work so it’s perfect for me.
“The advice I would give is that T Levels are brilliant if, like me, you are a bit indecisive and want to keep your options open. They give you so many ideas of different careers you can go after.”
