“I am able to study subjects and expand my horizons in ways I otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to” – Apprentice Ben Broadens Perspectives
Having been nominated for an Up Skill Apprenticeship at Loughborough College by his employer, Preci-Spark, learner Ben decided to go back to education as a mature student to complete the qualifications he was aspiring to.
Having already achieved a Level 2 functional English skills qualification, Ben is now focusing on his Level 3 Engineering Technician course in order to expand his skillset and future career prospects.
“Preci-Spark has had many apprentices come through Loughborough College over the years who now form some of the most vital roles in the company,” said Ben. “It was a natural step for me to take the same opportunity and expand on my own capabilities.”
Ben has been working as a Computer Numerical Controlled machine operator producing high quality precision parts for the aerospace industry with super alloys. Reflecting on his course so far and his new skills, he reflected, “The course is full of content that is relevant to the work I do now, although there are some modules and units that will come in more use as I progress my career. I’m able to study subjects and expand my horizons that I perhaps wouldn’t have had exposure to without this course.”
Tutor Chris Abel highlighted some of Ben’s other achievements since joining Loughborough College, explaining that Ben has gone above and beyond to achieve distinction level results. Chris also shared how Ben has spent time assisting students at College and at work and has been the student voice for bridging communications between learners and staff.
Ben agrees, citing the support from staff has been invaluable to his success, adding, “I am given constant support, both online and face to face, they are always accessible. I have also been offered the chance to represent other students to give feedback to tutors. It’s one of the many opportunities I’ve had at College.”
At work, Ben has already opened new doors for his development, including a recent move in departments. Looking ahead, Ben plans to continue achieving the best grades he can, and wants to evolve his career at Preci-Spark, taking on more opportunities as they arise.
“I would recommend people study this course at Loughborough as it’s broadened my skills and knowledge in ways I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.”
