Andrew Hurdle, former Loughborough College apprentice with multinational energy company SSE has been named Power Industry Apprentice of the Year at the 2024 Energy & Utility Skills Awards, held in Birmingham earlier this week.

Andrew began his Electrical Power Networks Engineer (EPNE) Apprenticeship in 2021, following a successful career as an electrician. Seeking to further develop his technical expertise and advance in industry, Hurdle returned to education through an electrical apprenticeship facilitated by Loughborough College. Throughout his apprenticeship, he excelled academically, consistently achieving top results, and earning the highest mark in his cohort with a distinction.

Not only has Andrew been a standout in his own studies, but he has also actively contributed to the growth of others in the field. As a passionate advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), he has been praised for mentoring fellow learners, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the business and the industry.

Apprenticeship Programme Manager at SSE, Kayleigh Bell shared, “Andrew’s unwavering commitment to supporting and inspiring others is evident in all the work he does, and it was highlighted at SSE’s 2024 week when he shared his experiences and advice with new apprentices and trainee engineers.”

Loughborough College’s Business Development Manager, Chris Hawkins agreed, adding, “We are so pleased to see Andrew receive this well-deserved recognition. His time at Loughborough College and subsequent contributions to the power industry have made him a role model for upcoming engineers and those looking to upskill within the industry.”

Andrew’s journey from electrician to award-winning apprentice underscores the importance of continuous learning and mentorship, making him an inspiring figure for the next generation of engineers and power industry professionals hoping to advance their careers through skill development.
